We have decided to go to Lake Superior.
For us that means heading West across Lake Erie to the Detroit River, then heading North up the river to Lake Huron, over some of our past sailing grounds to the North shore of Lake Huron and the St Marys River. We’ll follow the river up to Sault Ste Marie where we will pass through a lock to get around rapids in the river.
Once we pass through the lock we will enter the infamous Whitefish Bay, made famous in the song “The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. We’ll make our way to Munising and then turn back for home. We are arriving a little late in the season and we want to avoid any cold weather – they typically get at least one blast of snow in September!
When we return to Lake Huron, we plan to explore a bit of the North shore of Canada – Georgian Bay – a haven for boaters. Plans always change, but hopefully we’ll be able to do what we are planning, and that will mean we have sailed in all 5 Great Lakes, no mean accomplishment; its on many sailors’ bucket list.
