At the end of July, we left for a trip to Lakes Huron and Michigan. This was one of our bucket list adventures, so excitement was high. We started off crossing Lake Erie to the entrance of the Detroit River where we anchored near Sugar Island in the current of the river. Our next day took us up the river to Lake Saint Clair amd from there we headed North to Port Huron where we spent the night before heading into Lake Huron.
Our trip took us as far as Traverse City, Michigan. There we turned and reluctantly headed for home, stopping in Mackinaw City to visit Mackinac Island along the way. We were blessed with wonderful weather except for one big storm we encountered on our first day in Lake Huron. What a baptism! Having lived in Ohio for the last 40-plus years, we had no idea how beautiful the coast of Michigan was. Crystal clear water and rugged, rocky coastline greeted us and was a constant source of awe. Dropping anchor in 30 feet of water and SEEING the anchor on the bottom never ceased to amaze me. This area definitely begs for more exploration.
